If you’re in the DC area this weekend, you may need to be looking for something great to do that is indoors. I love our area but this rain is kicking my mood to the curb. I thought I’d share 7 things to do indoors in DC for you.
7 Things to Do Indoors in DC: Smithsonian Museums
We all know there are a ton of museums in this area and while some have outdoor displays many are indoors. I would suggest thinking outside of the box though. Skip the Air and Space Museum (We do love it!) and check out the National Portrait Gallery. First of all its going to be less crowded and secondly there are so many beautiful exhibits that you can look at including ones that are changing. The building is much larger than it looks from the outside and you can spend hours looking at all of the art.
7 Things to Do Indoors in DC: Imax Movies
There are several places you can see a movie in DC but checking out an Imax movie takes it to a new level. The best part is you can watch a few different movies and see everything from current blockbusters like Captain Marvel to educational films like Apollo 11.
7 Things to Do Indoors in DC: Plays
You can find different theaters that offer plays in the area. I’m partial to the National Theater because of the location and their variety in performances. Next up on their line up is A Bronx Tale. While it doesn’t start until 3/26, you can still get tickets to visit next weekend.
7 Things to Do Indoors in DC: Historical Sites
Many of the historical sites in DC are actually museums so they could technically fall under the first heading BUT I think they deserve their own space. My personal favorite is to go to Ford’s Theater. I can remember going there as a child with my mom and have enjoyed passing that memory on to my kids. Rachael is of course absolutely fascinated with Abraham Lincoln so it is one of her must sees. Ford’s Theater also falls under the Plays category as they are still a working theater. The current play running is Into the Woods.
7 Things to Do Indoors in DC: Botanical Gardens
When I did the 3-Day with Susan G Komen walk, we walked passed the Botanical Gardens. It was such a beautiful site to see as we struggled through our 5th mile of the day. The beauty is unsurpassed by any other in the area. There are different events that you can participate in as well from cooking demonstrations to yoga. Not all displays are inside, hopefully you get a brief spell of good weather to run outside.
7 Things to Do Indoors in DC: International Spy Museum
This museum is not run by the Smithsonian although many of them are close by. The International Spy Museum puts you into the story as you receive a cover story. You travel through the years and devices that are used for spy missions. The F street location closed in January 2019 but the new location opens in May 2019.
7 Things to Do Indoors in DC: Mansion at O Street
The Mansion at O Street has several different tour options for you. You can be a sleuth and look for secret doors or better yet take the Rosa Parks tour which includes a screening of part of Ms. Park’s life at the mansion.
