The big hot topic all week was Mel Gibson, his girlfriend and the tapes on Radar Online. So Monday Whoopie stated that she had personal experience with Mel and didn’t feel he was a racist. She further stated that even though that was the case she did not agree with the recordings and was sickened over the recordings and the way this woman was treated. I’m sickened as well. NO person should be treated like this. I do have issues with the fact that she released these recordings to what is basically a tabloid website rather than going straight to the police but that’s not my place to decide.
But then Wednesday Whoopie revealed some further news. She had received phone calls at her office regarding the fact that she had said Mel wasn’t a racist and how horrible she was. I’ve been a supporter of Whoopie for a long time but was really turned off today. I would hope that she put emphasis on the wrong words in her statement BUT I for one was rather upset by the disdain she used in her statement when she said “All of you nice bloggers out there, and all the folks that sit around at home and try to figure out stuff to do” Just doing a quick google search found several media outlets that had picked up this story not just bloggers. And Ms. Goldberg please know this blogger doesn’t just sit at home trying to figure out something to do nor do 100% of the other bloggers I know. Many of us run our blogs as a full time job and for some of us it is a full time job on top of a other jobs. In my particular case, I work a full time job from home while raising 2 children, running a household, going to school full-time AND blogging. I in no way thought you were racist for standing up for Mel. I’m sorry that your office staff was harassed that was inappropriate and if it continues I would hope you would take appropriate measures, but please do not lump all of us under one category.

I personally have no interest in the show itself and rarely watch TV in general. That being said, I do like Whoopi, but that comment was definitely off in my opinion. There are bloggers that attack celebrities or spread hateful untruths about them, but that is not the majority, simply the minority and a very small blogging niche.
To make such a general statement. Also, how is what we do any different from what she does on a daily basis? We talk about our thoughts and opinions just like she does on her show. How many times has something she said offended someone? We are not insulting her intelligence or worth though.

Man I wish I just got to sit around and blog! I’m not really upset by the comment though. I can see why she would say it. She was sort of attacked. I wouldn’t take it personal if I were you!

I wasn’t able to watch the show yesterday because I was in NYC. Had I watched I probably would have posted my thoughts on that comment too. I don’t think you are reacting at all. I WISH I could just sit around all day trying to figure stuff out. HA! Even when I’m blogging I’m doing other things (I am a great multi-tasker). 99.99% of the blogger I know don’t just sit around.They are being pulled in a dozen directions at all times yet are still able to maintain a quality blog.
I love Whoopie too, but this comment was totally NOT necessary.
It will be tough for mel to recover from this. This might be the start towards the end of his huge carreer. He should have been much more careful about some of the things he said
mel gibson is a waste of space!!!! how many more times can this guy offend pretty much everyone he comes into contact with? i can’t stand to think what the next outragious thing to come from his mouth will be, i really can’t stand the man… so yeah maybe he made one or two decent films!!! don’t forget he also made a bloody lot more really poor ones!!! ok, rant finished.
