WoHOO! A 3 day weekend! No not that kind of three day weekend, it was a Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure® weekend. Saturday was the preview expo for the DC 3-Day for the Cure®. So I headed up to Holy Cross Hospital. When arriving I was greeted by some great ladies and gentlemen. They had clinics set up for Blister prevention, injury prevention & stretching, Attack the pack (how to pack a duffle bag for 3 days and weighing less than 35 pounds), and Live on the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure®.
On the left side of the conference room were New Balance, Potomac River Running, and Road Runner. Down the middle of the room were some informational areas with articles of inspiration, a map for the typical layout of camp and the lovely ladies of Energizer®.
These ladies had some great samples to give away. And the overwhelming feeling I got was this infectious commraderie. We’re all walking for our personal reasons but together we walk for one purpose. I also got to meet Mandy from The Pink Purpose. Mandy and I started following each other on Twitter a few months ago so it was fantastic to meet her in person. After meeting these ladies I headed to the Ask the Expert area.
In charge of the Fundrasising area was Sandra Bryant. (I just realized this morning that Sandy and are on the same team!) This is Sandy’s 4th walk. Sandy and I talked for awhile about her journey and then we conquered some fundraising ideas. The first word from Sandy was Silpada, a sterling silver jewelry company that hosts in home party. If hosting an in-home party, talk to your representative about working out a strategy. Some representatives will give you your portion of the sales as a donation rather than free product, some will even go above that and donate their commision or a portion of it for your fund drive. I tried snapping a few pictures of Sandy but she was so animated and energetic that they just don’t show her well. (Sandy if you have photo you’d like added just email me.)
The next table was the registration/general questions table. Carrie Campbell and Jennifer Bowman made me feel like we were all together and anyone can make this journey. This is the 7th 3-Day for the Cure® for each of these ladies. Carrie states she turned 50 this year and is aiming at 50 donations of $100 or more was very informative. I listened as she talked about past walks and answered questions for other participants that were there. Unfortunately I didn’t get a ton of time to talk one on one with Carrie as she was there doing a job and other participants had questions that needed to be answered. Jennifer and I talked for a great while though. When Jennifer started her first walk in 2004 she didn’t think she really knew anyone that had breast cancer. As she started fundraising she found that breast cancer has affected more people than she realized. This friend’s mother, that friend’s sister in law, this friend’s friend. Too many women. Carrie and Jennifer are on Team Individuals United. As we finished talking the ladies were headed to get a picture of their team together. The last thing Jennifer did was give me a hug. Talk about making someone feel welcome and a part of the group. Thanks Jennifer.
After getting the information from around the room I headed over to the New Balance section. While talking to Jennifer I had met Patty another participant who will turn 67 just before the walk in October. Patty I swear did not look a day over 45. While she’s been training, Patty found some socks from New Balance that she highly suggested. So I was off to see if they had them. A few minutes later and my wallet a lot lighter, I had a new pair of shoes, some socks and a new hat for walking in.
Sunday morning I got up bright and early and headed to Pasadena. I joined a group of ladies for a walk at John Down’s park. Two hours and 4 miles later my feet were sore and I had to stop. I’m thinking the idea of new shoes and new socks at the same time and a 4 mile walk was a little off. I spent the rest of the day with some great friends and we did a little more shopping. I’m trying hard to find a good hydration pack. Does anyone have a suggestion? I need something that I can pack a small first aid kit, spare socks and my phone into. Doing long walks and trying to carry a bottle of water is cumbersome.

That’s awesome that you got to go to the expo. I missed the one in Michigan because we already had plans but it sounded like it would have been fun (just like yours). I’m definitely going to plan to attend next years and I’ll be starting early for getting signed up for the event.

Oh Shawn Ann you missed out. I meet some really awesome ladies and just the spirit when you walked in the room was outstanding.
I heard of New Balance carries lots of running shoes and I thought they are like Nike or Adidas, but “less” trendy. However, at a very casual conversation with a friend; she said she needed to buy a pair of New Balance running shoes for her mother as the doctor directed. A friend on the side jumped in and said only the MADE IN USA ones are good but expensive. I pointlessly browsed the web on one random day and found this 993 model. I hesitated for 2 weeks before buying them because I am on a budget. However, Amazon has the cheapest price and what I paid is far more worth than my feet thanking me.
