Girl Scout Cookies

Girl Scout Cookies are fantastic. I’ll admit it. They are delicious but they have some huge pitfalls. Of course they are said to freeze well but who has actually had a box make it to the freezer for longer than a week or two? When we see those little girls pushing their form of crack we purchase a box or two of the samoas and make a donation for the rest of our money. But How much do girl scouts really make off that box of cookies?

Here’s the reason why we donate:

A box of cookies is $3.50.
$0.83 goes to the baker (Not bad right?)

The breakdown for the remaining money is:
$2 to the larger council for camps, activities and other costs.
$0.56 goes to the individual group
and that poor little girl that is walking house to house or standing in her uniform at the Walmart gets a measly $0.14. Her $0.14 cents a box is to be used for rewards and prizes including the cookie badge and pin.

Another thing to think about Keebler makes a peanut butter cookie that tastes just like tag-alongs, Lorna Doones are just like Trefoils and Keebler’s Grasshoppers are the same as Thin Mints. More into Do-si-dos? Try Nutter Butters. The only cookie we’ve come across that we like that doesn’t have a mainstream knock-off is the samoas.

To be honest the price of a box has doubled since I was a girl scout but the amount the girls get has only gone up minimally.

So the next time that little girl in her brown or green uniform comes knocking, remember that little girl is making 14 pennies for each box. Buy the ones you really want but think hard about giving her a donation to go to the troop and her.

Wow, only 14 cents huh? I would think they would get more!

Those samoas are my undoing!!! I could only buy one box the last time I was out and about because they’re all the way up to $4 in my area. They’re so expensive! I’m sorry to hear that the little girls only get a small percentage of that. They can rest assured that as long as no one makes a samoa knock off I will continue to buy those delicious calorie packed cookies. If only one box at at time. Hey that way I get a little calorie burn every time I walk back to the cookie stand. ;-)

That’s one of the reasons why when I was a leader I HATED doing cookie booths. Our troop got nothing out of it, other than standing on our feet begging people to buy them. UGH
It’s so much nicer just handing a check over to the girls than paying an arm and a leg for a box of 12 overpriced cookies.

They do this for the team, so I’m surprised they get any of it. Sometimes it’s about teamwork. (more should go to that troop though that these girls are in, so they can enjoy the fruits of their labor, as a team, more)

I started doing this last year. I don’t really want the stuff the kids in the neighborhood sell, but I want to support them. So I just give them a straight donation. I don’t think they really “get it”…that they are getting more this way.

Unfortunately they usually don’t understand why I’m giving them a donation instead of buying but it works out in the end. Last year our local troop was also collecting for a soldier that had been hurt. At first they thought I was giving them money for that. I had to get another $20 to donate for him before they understood.

  7. this post is very usefull thx!
