Christmas Really?

By Holly

I love Christmas. It is my favorite time of year. Always has been. Our kids are a lot like Steve and I. Charlie and I have crappy birthdays in relation to Christmas. Mine is 6 days before Christmas with Charlie’s being 11 days after. Steve and Rachael’s are 6 months away in the middle of June.   But I love this season. It means family and love, birthdays and celebrations.

So why am I talking about Christmas Really? Simple I’m so tired of it being crammed down my throat. An ad here and there is one thing. But the stores are loading up with trees and decorations and toys before Halloween is even over. Who is really buying their tree before November even starts? What are these people doing with it?

Of course the flip side of this are the people who put up their Christmas lights and never take them down. I’m not talking about the people that have small displays or just a string of white lights. I’m talking the neighbor down the street that has the HUGE lights in all the various colors that he lights up EVERY SINGLE DAY. Come on really? Who needs that much?

Why can’t we remember what Christmas is really about? Even if you’re not religious the reasons for Christmas can be so much simplier then they are. Celebrate with your family and friends. Remeber the past year and all the great things and even the not so great things. It’s been a hard year at our house. Lots of ups and our fair share of downs and I’m looking forward to the time of Christmas and renewal for the next year but I can wait until Thanksgiving is over.

The other incident that has brought this on is the over used commercials. Every time we watch TV I see at least 10 commercials about a Christmas sale. But this leads to my poor little man who is only 3 to constantly be asking me “Mommy it Christmas time yet?” No honey Christmas is a long time away. EVERY day I get asked this. And every day I break his poor little heart by saying not yet honey.

Steve’s thoughts run along the same line as mine although a little more deeper for him. His personal feelings are that it should be against the law to display Christmas items before Thanksgiving. Personally I think that’s a little over the top but I do agree that right now is just too much.

So you know I’m not a complete scrooge. The picture below is Charlie and Rachael last year. Santa and Mrs. Claus are my parents. They do Santa visits every year. This one was at the Festival of Lights, a festival of holiday trees that support Hospice in Charles County Maryland. While I haven’t double checked their schedule this year I am sure they are doing the Festival again.Santa and Mrs. Clause Festival of the Lights Charles county

Yeah, I know what you mean about having it crammed down your throat. And it seems to be happening earlier and earlier. Thanks for making me step back to think about what it’s all about.
