We’ve known for awhile now that something was off with baby Girl. Never could put a finger on it. She had a horrible time breastfeeding. Then we switched to milk based formula. That met with the same amount of success. She was then moved to Soy formula. (All within 2 months of being born) She had been doing fairly well with it (or so we thought) She has been spitting up more but the ped assured us it was reflux and asked to add cereal to her bottle. At her last appt I brought up the fact that she gets hives on a fairly regular basis. He pretty much blew me off. Luckily with the change of years brought a change in our insurance. So we self-referred to an allergist. I’m am over the moon happy with the idea that I followed my gut instinct on this one.
Rachael was tested yesterday. She had a total of 8 pokes. 1 and 2 were the controls. Next was milk since we thought she was getting hives from us kissing her after having milk products. Then came soy because that’s what she drinking. Next was oat. She has had it in the past and had projectile vomiting afterwards. Then the allergist was very helpful and talked with us about the foods we would like to give her and what would be the least allergenic. So she was tested for peas, green beans and bananas.
Low and behold, Sweet Baby Girl does indeed have allergies. Her control came back a 4+ positive. Her soy was a 2+. Definitely allergic to soy and was immediately switched to milk based formula yesterday. She also had positives with peas and green beans. At this point the plan is to just avoid those and she’ll be retested in 6 months. Trying to keep a 7 month old from moving is too difficult so the green beans and peas could be false positives from where she 1) moved too much and mixed chemicals or 2) is hypersensitive because of the soy allergy.
The hives we’ve been seeing are very intersting. They actually had nothing to do with what might be lingering on us but more to do with the soy allergy. Because she was constantly getting the allergen her body was super sensitive. Pressure on any area was enough to release the histamines and cause the hives.
Now after saying all this, milk based formula did not go over well last night. Rachael ate about 8, went to bed and then was up from 1130-1200 vomiting. I changed her bed linens twice. So this morning I’ve already gotten up, dressed and hit the grocery store for some hypoallergenic formula. Let’s pray this is the answer. It has no milk and the soy amount is so small it’s not listed as an allergen on the label.
